Looking for Someone You Lost Touch With? Why a People-Search Subscription Won’t Get You There

The holidays have a way of bringing certain names back to mind.

An old college roommate. A cousin who drifted away. A relative you haven’t spoken to in fifteen years. Every year around this time, people start typing names into search bars — and most end up more confused (and more billed) than when they started.

The people-search sites promising “instant results” were never built to find one specific person. They were built to sell subscriptions.

The Problem With People-Search Sites

These sites buy data in bulk from brokers, stitch it together by algorithm, and rarely check whether it’s still true. The result:

  • Addresses from three moves ago, labeled “current”
  • Merged profiles, where two people with similar names become one
  • Wrong relatives, linked through an old shared address
  • Phone numbers that now belong to a stranger

And accuracy isn’t always the priority. In 2023, the FTC ordered TruthFinder and Instant Checkmate to pay $5.8 million after the companies told users someone had a criminal record when it was actually a traffic ticket — then charged monthly fees to see the full report.

Those fees keep climbing. As of this writing, TruthFinder charges $28.99 a month for people search and $4.99 a month for a reverse phone lookup. Instant Checkmate runs $35.47 a month. Every plan renews automatically until you cancel.

Investigator’s Tip: When two people-search sites show two different “current” addresses, they’re often both wrong. Conflicting results mean stale data, not a lead.

Signs Your Search Has Gone Sideways

🚩 You’re paying for a third subscription If two sites haven’t found them, another pulling from the same brokers won’t either.

🚩 The “match” is the wrong age or in the wrong state Merged records are common. Don’t knock on a stranger’s door based on a guess.

What Maverick’s Does Differently

We don’t use data dumps. We combine OSINT with restricted investigative databases available only to authorized users who pass identity validation and physical site inspections. Then we:

  • Validate our results — and tell you plainly when something can’t be confirmed
  • Answer your questions about the report
  • Charge once. No subscription, nothing to cancel.

Not every reunion is welcome, either. We’ll help you reach out respectfully, so the other person gets to choose how the story continues.

Before You Start Searching

  • Gather what you know. Full name, approximate age, last known city, family, schools, employers.
  • Read the fine print on any “trial.” Most become monthly charges.
  • Decide how you’ll reach out before you find them. First contact matters.

If there’s a name you can’t stop thinking about this season, Maverick’s Detective Agency can help you find them — accurately, legally, and with respect for everyone involved.

Discreetly. Quickly. Without judgment.

Some of the best stories start with “I found you.”
